Name - Dana Gabriel

Country of origin - US

Bio -  I have a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science/International Relations and a minor in Spanish Language from the University of California, Berkeley.  I spent a year studying at the University of Madrid, Spain – Ciencias Politicas.  I also spent a summer studying in San Jose, Costa Rica.  When my first child was born we made Spanish the first language in our home and raise our children in a bilingual environment.  I started helping friends with their Spanish and then realized, as a non-native speaker, I have extra tricks and insights that can really help when trying to learn the language, so I decided to take on outside students.

Specialty - As a non-native speaker I understand the unique challenges a non-native speaker faces when trying to master the grammar.  I shape all of my classes to uniquely fit each student’s needs and wants—whether it is to learn/perfect grammar skills, hold a conversation or use the language in a specific setting.  I focus on beginner to intermediate levels (though will teach advanced grammar) and also teach corporate groups.

Location - Coastal areas, Carmel Valley, Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Mission Valley

Other- $30/hr, group instruction rates available

Name: Fernanda Tudesco

Country of origin: Argentina

Bio: I am a native Spanish speaker with 8 years of experience teaching my language and culture.

I have worked at Torrey Pines Elementary School, at La Jolla, teaching k to 5 for two years.

My approach to teaching is very organized and methodical. I think that the interaction between a student and a teacher is incredibly important and that this is based both on the personality of each, but also on the needs of the student. I am aware that students have different needs. I believe in taking students through their work thoroughly, promptly and patiently and encourage them to stretch and extend their learning through reading, writing and listening as well as understanding exactly what my students want, and organize myself in order to achieve it together, is my main objective.

The most important thing for me is the satisfaction of my student and the advances that they gain to learn the Spanish. One of the things that make my classes different is my compromise to help the students to learn enjoying the process and the classes.

Specialty: I teach all levels and all ages, offering lessons for private o semi private ( 2 persons) in speech, grammar, vocabulary,  but most of the classes will be spent having a conversation. I offer classes from beginning to advance.  Classes for corporations and small business are also an option.

Name - Sara Mongoven

Country of origin - Mexico

Bio - Teaching and learning Spanish is a wonderful experience to enjoy! I was raised in Mexico, and I spent most of my life there. I have been teaching Spanish to a wide variety of people that includes business professionals, university students and children located in North County. I have also worked for Pura Buena Onda as a substitute teacher.

I can relate very much with my students’ desire to learn Spanish since my husband is a perfect example for me of what it is to learn the language. I can see firsthand the improvement one can make in this particular language as well as the challenges it presents.

From my personal experience, I consider a high level of professionalism, well-developed teaching techniques and the instruction of practical learning concepts using various materials to be very important. I adopted this attitude after I completed my studies and received my degree. However, I believe that a fun class makes a big difference.

Specialty – I teach students of all ages and levels. Classes are specially designed based on age and level of the students, focusing on conversational skills and grammar.

Since I have been around a lot of people with the desire to learn Spanish, and because I have been in the process myself of learning another language, I understand the importance of creating a smooth learning process, combining grammar and immersion techniques. Because having a comfortable environment is a big plus for any student’s participation, I make my best effort to provide that kind of atmosphere in my classes.

I can tell you that teaching both adults and children is my passion. Each learning session is unique, and teaching any one of my students is such an interesting, fun and enjoyable experience.

Name: Travis Gilbert

Country of origin: US

BIO: For as long as I can remember I've had a love and fascination for languages. I began studying Spanish as a middle school student after purchasing my first phrase book and I have been hooked ever since. I went on to take Spanish classes all throughout high school, during which time I was honored with the Spanish Award for being the top student of my class. I later earned a bachelor's degree in Global Studies, where I focused the majority of my projects around issues concerning Latin America. Meanwhile, over the years I have traveled extensively throughout many Spanish-speaking countries, while continuing to intensely study Spanish through the use of advanced grammar books and online programs. Living in San Diego, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to use Spanish on a daily basis and to immerse myself in the language as much as possible.

Through my own challenges and triumphs with studying Spanish, I have discovered a passion for teaching others. The ability to understand and communicate in Spanish is a wonderful skill that truly opens up so many possibilities. I thoroughly enjoy helping others advance their abilities and increase their confidence in using this beautiful language.

Specialty: I specialize in teaching beginner students with little or no knowledge of Spanish. I draw a lot from my own experiences of learning the language in order to offer the most effective and easy to understand explanations. The three elements that I incorporate into each lesson are grammar, practice exercises, and conversation. Initially, grammar is the most important aspect for beginners because it provides the foundation upon which language skills are built. As a student's capabilities gradually increase, then the conversational part of each lesson plays a more prominent role. My ultimate objective is to bring each beginner student up to an intermediate level of communicating in Spanish.

Rates: $30 / 1 hour; $40 / 1 hour and a half
